While Buenos Aires is not an inexpensive city, the subway is a bargain at about 50 cents USD. Unfortunately, the subway only stays open until a little after 10 pm. In a city where the residents don’t even eat dinner until 9 or 10 pm – and later on the weekends – this seems very early.
Three times now, I’ve had people walk through the subway car and drop an item on my lap: tissues, food, and a written request for financial help. I would have been more confused had I not read about this in advance. After distributing items to the entire subway car, the person comes back through. Apparently, you simply hand back the item if you don’t wish to purchase it (or make a donation), and the person moves to the next subway card to redistribute the items. It works.
