Eating in Cyprus

We’ve eaten lots of yummy things in Cyprus! Here are some of our favorites thus far.

Halloumi

It’s the national cheese of cyprus, which explains why there are dozens of varieties in our grocery store. (For comparison, I never saw more than one variety in any US store, and I didn’t know about it at all until we move to California.)

For the meal in the photo, I grilled halloumi with zucchini and then served it with pita bread and tzatziki sauce. Halloumi appears in everything here: sandwiches, pizzas, omelets, little cheese tart things, etc. There are probably ten different types of halloumi ravioli at our grocery store.

Steamed Artichokes

My dad used to make steam artichokes for us to eat together, so they have a special place in my heart. The artichokes here in Cyprus are amazing; probably the most tender and tasty that I’ve ever eaten.

Everything Wrapped in Phyllo Dough

There are also many, many varieties of phyllo dough in the grocery store. I don’t understand the words on the packaging (it’s Greek to me!), but I wrap veggies, cheese, and random leftovers inside and bake. Below, the filling is lentils, brown rice, and caramelized onions (all remainders from other meals) with cumin.

Strained (Greek) Yogurt

We can buy it in 2 kilogram tubs! We eat it with our cereal and have gone through at least 10 kilograms since arriving in Cyprus. The tubs also make great beach toys.

Indian Food

We (heart) Indian food. Luckily, there is a fantastic Indian restaurant just about 10 minutes from our house, probably to cater to all of the British expats. We decided that it was our duty to eat there (or get takeaway) at least twice a week. So far, we’ve done our duty well.
