Costa Rica has tons of fruit stands with a wide variety of options, some familiar, some not. Definitely in the unfamiliar-to-us category was this fruit, which Wikipedia tells me is the Rambutan.
After selecting some more conventional bananas, I pointed at this fruit, said some vaguely-Spanish-sounding words, and the fruit-vending man peeled one and offered it to me.
It was lovely – the flavor was mostly like a grape, possibly with some hints of coconut and a very mild citrus. I brought a kilo* home and we’ve been snacking on it with meals.
* Reminder to self – a kilo is always more than you expect.
