Even though we didn’t pack particularly heavily to begin with, the cobblestone streets in France convinced us that even less stuff would be better. About a month ago, we traded in our one suitcase for a second backpack and culled our possessions (mostly clothing) so that everything would fit.
We also gave away our non-digital books and are only reading digital books now. We resisted for a while, mainly because we were trying to avoid introducing Theo to screens in any significant way while he’s still so young, but the argument for lightness won out. Dr. Seuss books are fortunately available in iBooks.
In general, going from a household full of stuff to possessions we can fit into two backpacks and the bottom of a stroller has been remarkably painless. Getting rid of stuff is still hard, but I haven’t missed much at all once it’s gone.
